The Globe and Mail, paragon of Canadian journalism, was humbled earlier this week by VANOC CEO John Furlong during an announcement of the newspaper's assuming the mantle of the Official National Newspaper of the 2010 Olympics.
In an incident that was somehow not reported by the Globe, Furlong announced the endorsement of the Games by the Globe and Mail as he presented a sponsorship plaque to Globe publisher Phillip Crawley as follows, and you could not make this up:
"I'm very proud to present you with this plaque, to recognize the remarkable relationship that we'll have together for the next few years. And I hope you also recognize that it's implied that 60 per cent of the headlines will be 'Those VANOC guys are super-great.'"
I feel I need to point out again that I am not making this quote up, it was reported in the Province newspaper.
Should be a remarkable relationship indeed. Like the relationship I once had with a stingray in Mexico. It hurt like hell, but I paid good money for the opportunity to be stung.
