History of squatting in Vancouver

Everything old is new again. Few people in the city know the history of squatting in Vancouver beyond the Woodsquat. Fortunately, someone has taken the time to digitize and make available a documentary on the Frances Street squat that ran from February to November of 1990 in a number of houses that were purchased and left vacant by developers.

The squat was ultimately crushed by police when spokespeople for the VPD said the house was full of weapons. No weapons were found when the police stormed the building and searched the property and all of the occupants. The buildings were then torn down by the city following a unanimous vote of Council.

Beyond the Frances Street squat, there's a pretty neat review of squat histories in Vancouver available here, starting with the europeans squatting on indigenous lands.

Check out the Frances Street squat in five parts on youtube here.
