From today's Georgia Straight, read to the chorus of Handel's Messiah:

City hall has cracked the whip on the owners of three Vancouver single-room-occupancy hotels by ordering them to repair their buildings under threat of court action.

According to the article, enforcing the Standards of Maintenance Bylaw is already working.

Now that wasn't so hard, was it?

    A couple of homeless folks crossed my path and encountered many roadblocks in getting them the necessary help.

    First, calling for shelters - man it's tough! I got rejected, even laughed at ( I guess, cuz I was calling pretty late) - tried again during the day.. still pretty hard to get a bed...

    Second, one fellow REALLY wanted to quit drinking. I mean this guy was SERIOUS, came by my shop everyother day to make a call to ACCESS. He was on the waitlist and part of their protocol is for him to call every day to show how serious he was. Well for five days, this guy kept calling, he even tried to quit cold turkey, which is dangerous for his health.
    A week later, he was told that since he detoxed himself, he didn't need their services anymore and got delisted! - So, he got angry and drank again..

    However not giving up, this guy tried again, we did the whole process for another week. Took the guy to the hospital to get some help since he can't walk 2 blocks without resting due to chronic pain & arthritis, he also has skitsophrenia & manic depression..
    After 2 long hours, waiting for a social worker to come, we were greeted with the message that the hospital will mostly likely not take him and we should just move on.. nice..

    Anyhoo, dropped him off at UGM, and a worker their assured me that he knows him, but didn't even know his name... he left the next day and refused to go back.

    Good news ...He's in detox,
    Bad news.. he will be released on Wednesday (welfare day)... with no treatment centre lined up.. - no wonder why people relapse...

    So there.. just a short story on 1 individual.. I'm sure there are many more others can share
